The Creds — in a nutshell:

Barbara K. Balkin is a Boise artist, originally from Los Angeles, CA., born in Augsburg, Germany. Her artistic process began as a child, with frequent family excursions to her favorite places: LA County Museum of Art, LA County Arboretum, Descanso Gardens, and Barnsdall Art Center.Barbara K. She studied at Barnsdall Junior Arts Center, UCLA, and with various art teachers in the So Cal area.

After earning an Interior and Environmental Design Certification from U.C.L.A.,  Barbara began working in residential design, and then in the corporate world designing high-rise office interiors in Southern California.  Her desire for more creativity resulted in her own company and retail store in Studio City, CA — B.K. Handin Designs, showcasing her original ceramic tableware and art cards.

Her ceramics have been featured in national publications such as Bon Appetit and Good Housekeeping magazines, as well as the L.A. Gift Mart, New York Merchandise Mart, and Dallas Market Center.  Custom pieces are in private collections in Hong Kong and Israel.  Barbara’s work has decorated sets at Disney Studios, as well as commercials for General Electric, Vons Markets and Kraft Foods.

In 2008, Barbara co-founded Back Gate Studio in Los Angeles, CA, providing children with classes to expand their creative horizons. In 2010, her family and the Studio relocated to Boise, ID.  The Studio offers families art experiences, both after school and in summer workshops.

Ms. Balkin has enjoyed designing and facilitating the art projects for several very successful school Art Auctions, such as Sherman Oaks Elementary School’s Spring Gala (CA) and several of Hidden Springs Elementary School’s Art Auction Fundraisers (ID). She also was co-Art Coordinator for the Hidden Springs Elementary art program.

In addition, she established another creative company, ARTKIN, in 2012, providing the materials and instruction for everyone to easily create their own beautiful multi-image keepsake canvas. Her newest venture is her uncommon weavings and wrapped stone jewelry. Her Etsy shop is in the works!
